How to Choose the Right Passenger Elevator for a Pakistani Building
Capacity, speed, drive type, code and finish: an engineer's checklist for specifying passenger elevators in residential and commercial projects.
What capacity to pick
Residential apartments: 630 KG (8 persons) per 20–24 units. Mixed-use / small office: 800 KG. Commercial: 1000–1600 KG with group control above 8 stops. Hospitals: 1600 KG bed lift minimum. Cargo back-of-house: 2000 KG+.
What speed to pick
Rule of thumb: keep rise/speed ratio near 40 seconds top-to-bottom. 1.0 m/s up to 8 stops, 1.5–1.75 m/s for 8–15 stops, 2.5 m/s for 15–25 stops, 3.0+ m/s for high-rise. Above 2.5 m/s a compensating rope or chain is required per EN 81-20 §5.5.5.
